Hamilton landlord receives $8K fine for failing to maintain smoke alarms

Headlines News smoke alarmsJan. 30, 2024, Hamilton, Ont. – A local property owner has pleaded guilty to failing to maintain primary and secondary power supplies that serve smoke alarms.
Beau Spencer, three other directors and the corporation 233 Victoria Holdings Inc. were convicted and fined $8,000.
Spencer received a suspended sentence and the remaining matters were withdrawn.
“The Hamilton Fire Department continues to work diligently to reduce fire risk through fire prevention and enforcement strategies. Property owners who do not meet the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code in their rental properties, including the proper installation and maintenance of smoke alarms or smoke alarm systems, may be prosecuted,” said Pete deBoer, the city’s chief fire prevention officer, in a press release.
